Class Subject: Advanced Seminar in Painting

Teaching Philosophy

Advanced Seminar in Painting began in the Fall of 2018 at the Art League of Long Island. The seminar presents a setting for students of Art to discuss, present and critique each other’s works. Through open
discussion of value, line, shape, texture and other elements of art,
students are guided and encouraged in developing their own personal
voice.
Artist’s Statement
My paintings are improvisations of gesture and color, light and fluidity. I
will often extract, from my daily views, elements of nature, light, wind,
water and sky, translating them into abstract art. By offering a visualization of energy, motion and emotion, I encourage the viewer to trace my movements and perhaps recognize, or more accurately “feel” in the work something common to us all.

There are no words that can clearly and completely define an abstract or a non-objective painting. Expression through the immediate, spontaneous experience of feeling is to accept and reach beyond the limitations of human language. As I begin to move paint across the surface, forms emerge among relative color values which trigger inevitable responses. I continue to react to the marks I make searching for visions through revision, chaos and ultimate resolution. The painting continually evolves. Even when finished, it appears as something in the state of “becoming”. In so doing, my hope is to stimulate and inspire the viewer’s own sensitivity and imagination with paintings far removed from our everyday world of objects and images.
