Ceramics in China: Traditions and Innovations

Presenting this talk is a young clay enthusiast, Katie Zhao is a rising freshman at Cornell University, where she will study Applied Economics and Management. Her interest in Chinese ceramics has led her to discover the art through some of its main cultural origins in the country.
Katie approached Art League about giving a short presentation on her experience traveling to famous ceramics centers in China, showing the importance of ceramics in the past as well as how the industry continues to develop today along traditional lines.

Also, joining her is a ceramic artist, Yue Wang. She lives in Jinan, China. Yue Wang began her study of pottery in 2010, and has since then travelled to famous ceramic production sites across the globe, including China, Japan, Taiwan, and the Nordic countries, where she connected with famous artists in the region to promote learning and exchange.

In 2012, she established the Chaishan Kiln Pottery Studio, which specializes in the creation of vases, decorative pieces, and utensils. The studio emphasizes building on the foundations of traditional ceramics in the style of modern ceramics, highlighting the values of “shape, color, and feeling”.
